Sir Mark Elder returns as Conductor Emeritus of the Hallé Orchestra to lead a distinguished symphonic programme. The evening opens with two of Debussy's Impressionistic Nocturnes—Nuages and Fêtes—which contrast the melancholy drift of clouds with the vibrant energy of a carnival celebration.
Wagner's Meistersinger Suite distils the operatic narrative into twenty minutes, featuring key moments from Act Three and the grand Prelude to Act One. The programme concludes with Strauss's Ein Heldenleben, an orchestral self-portrait that showcases the dynamic breadth of the late 19th-century orchestra through its depiction of heroic battles, relationships, and peaceful retirement.
