New Perspectives' Open Pitch presents sixTeen, a coming-of-age drama by Lisa McKenzie and Jayne Williams. Set on Carsic Estate in Sutton-in-Ashfield during the 1984 miners' strike, the play explores a girl's perspective of a world shaped by industry and policy. Through the experiences of working-class teenage girls and women, it examines resilience and self-determination in Thatcher's Britain, with contemporary resonance for today.
Performed unplugged by three actors, this raw and unflinching production challenges conventional narratives. The performance is followed by a question-and-answer session with Dr. Lisa McKenzie, offering audiences deeper insight into the play's themes and development through New Perspectives' Open Pitch programme.
