Join K Angel, Gemma Lees and Antonia King for Writing Our Whole Selves: Intersectional Identities and Creative Spaces
Beyond the Spectrum is a programme specifically for autistic and neurodivergent writers. But being autistic is only one part of who we are and, sometimes, other parts of our intersectional identities may hold as strong a pull over our self-expression, how we create, and the communities we form. Not all autistic people have the same experience, background, culture, challenges, or privilege. To explore this, Beyond the Spectrum created some specific identity-related groups. K Angel leads our LGBTQIA+ group in the south east, Gemma Lees leads our group in the north of England that extends a special welcome to people from the GTRSB community, and Antonia King leads our group for people from the Global Majority.
In this panel, the lead writers will talk about why identity-specific spaces matter. We will consider if smaller, dedicated groups feel safer and more joyful, and if there are limits to this. Do these groups give writers more room to grow? Why do labels matter? And how can intersectional spaces strengthen our community rather than divide it?
