The Hallé orchestra, conducted by Elena Schwarz, presents an evening of orchestral works spanning Czech, British, and Finnish traditions. Acclaimed American violinist Leila Josefowicz performs Thomas Adès's Violin Concerto, a contemporary work structured around concentric patterns that balance rhythmic intensity with moments of contemplative stillness.
The programme opens with Dvořák's In Nature's Realm, a pastoral work evoking the composer's homeland through folk-inspired themes and colourful orchestration. It concludes with Sibelius's Lemminkäinen Suite, based on poems from the Finnish epic Kalevala. This performance marks the work's Nottingham premiere. The celebrated second movement, The Swan of Tuonela, depicts the mythological swan of the underworld. A pre-concert talk by William Ruff begins at 6:20pm in the auditorium.
