The Sunday Piano Series opens its new season with pianist Vadym Kholodenko, winner of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. This recital presents a carefully curated programme of works by composers at the height of their creative powers.
The concert begins with Liszt's Three Concert Études, showcasing the composer's characteristically poetic and expressive style. The centrepiece is Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, known as the 'Hammerklavier', a substantial work of considerable emotional range and technical complexity that concludes with an extensive fugue.
These informal Sunday performances feature introductions from the stage and offer the opportunity to meet the pianist in the bar following the concert.
