Conductor John Wilson and pianist Benjamin Grosvenor lead the Sinfonia of London in an evening of classical works spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. The programme opens with Grażyna Bacewicz's Concerto for String Orchestra, a bold composition written during the Stalinist era, which combines vigorous opening passages with introspective middle sections and a defiant conclusion.
Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 follows, performed by Grosvenor, a BBC Young Musician of the Year winner known for his performances at the BBC Proms. The work showcases romantic melodies and emotional depth characteristic of the composer's orchestral writing.
The evening concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, an orchestral suite inspired by Arabian Nights tales. The piece features vivid musical imagery and harmonic colours that evoke the exotic narratives of the source material.
A free pre-concert talk with John Wilson takes place at 6:00pm in the auditorium. Tickets range from £15.50 to £45.50.
