About this event

Mon0lisa Productions presents Prostate Not Prostrate: When Silence Is the Real Thief!

“Too many Black men are dying from prostate cancer in silence. Through Patty Dumplin, this play acts like a key — unlocking conversations without shame, helping men feel confident to speak with their GP and take action.” – Lisa Jackson, Writer & Producer

Prostate cancer disproportionately affects Black men - one in four Black African and Black Caribbean men will get prostate cancer, compared to one in eight men of other ethnicities according to Orchid. By combining comedy with education, this humorous and moving play delivers this vital message in an accessible and memorable way, following sharp-tongued grandmother Patty Dumplin as she encourages her husband to see a doctor, exposing the fear, silence, and humour surrounding prostate cancer.

Audiences can join a post-show discussion with Ali Orhan from Orchid and local Champions.

The evening features information stalls from Friends and Bredrins (FAB), The Rose Thompson Foundation, Nottinghamshire Sexual Violence Support Services, and Orchid Nottingham Community Champions, highlighting male cancers — including prostate, testicular, and penile.

Hosted by Mon0lisa Productions, funded by Orchid, and supported by local Community Champions

Beyond her solo endeavours, Lisa collaborates with researchers, academics, public sector organisations, and charities, aiding them in connecting with their audiences. Her work extends into educational settings, where she engages with children and young people. Recognising the power of collective storytelling, she actively participates with local communities, and works with various participants, offering them a platform to inform the creative process and contribute to the authenticity of the narratives.

This collaborative approach enriches the creative process, ensuring that diverse voices, including Lisa's alter ego Mon0lisa, are heard and represented. Lisa's one-woman plays, performed under the moniker Mon0lisa, stand as a testament to her ability to captivate audiences through solo performances, providing a platform for authentic storytelling and exploration of complex emotions. Embracing the term "accessible artist," Lisa embodies a commitment to making her art approachable to a broad audience, recognising the power of narrative in connecting people and creating shared experiences.
