Twisted Ribbons of Song: The Saga of the Earls of Orkney and poetry from and inspired by northern Scotland

Join us for an invigorating poetry reading inspired by Old Norse poetry from Orkneyinga saga by Professor Emerita Judith Jesch and poet Charlotte Eichler. The event will celebrate the publication of Judith’s new translation of Orkneyinga saga and the work of the Ragna’s Islands Project on which Charlotte was a creative collaborator.
Judith Jesch is Emeritus Professor of Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham and directed the Ragna’s Islands project in 2024-2025; her edition and translation of The Saga of the Earls of Orkney was published by Birlinn in November. Charlotte Eichler has an MA in Norse and Viking Studies from the University of Nottingham. Her first collection of poetry, Swimming Between Islands, was published by Carcanet in 2023.
This event is jointly run by the School of English's Centre for the Study of the Viking Age and the Centre for Literary Creativity, Community, and Place. The event will take place in Senate Chamber, Trent Building, University Park, University of Nottingham. There will be free refreshments.
