Opera North presents Dead Man Walking, a significant work in contemporary opera that examines themes of compassion, faith and forgiveness. Based on Sister Helen Prejean's memoir, the opera follows a prison chaplain who agrees to provide spiritual guidance to a man imprisoned for murder as he faces execution. Caught between the grief of both the perpetrator's family and his victims' families, Helen confronts the emotional and moral complexities of her role.
With a libretto by playwright Terrence McNally and score by Jake Heggie, Dead Man Walking offers a considered exploration of capital punishment and human redemption. This co-production with English National Opera and Finnish National Opera will be performed at the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall. Ticket prices range from £23 to £81.50, with priority booking for Friends of Opera North beginning Tuesday 5 May at 10am.
