Set in 1930s Los Angeles during the Great Depression, the narrative follows Walter Huff, a discerning insurance salesman who specializes in identifying fraud. His carefully constructed world shifts when he encounters Phyllis Nirdlinger to discuss a life insurance policy. What begins as a professional interaction evolves into a dangerous partnership built on mutual attraction and criminal ambition.

The plot unfolds as Walter and Phyllis devise a scheme to murder her husband and claim the insurance payout. However, as their plan progresses, passion and suspicion threaten to unravel their carefully laid preparations.
