By Royal Appointment offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on Queen Elizabeth II's relationship with fashion and the people who shaped her public image. The play explores how the late Queen used her wardrobe as a subtle form of communication, conveying messages through carefully selected coats and hats when discretion prevented her from speaking directly.
Written by Daisy Goodwin, creator of the ITV series Victoria, the production centres on the Queen's Dresser—a working-class woman who rose to become one of the monarch's most trusted advisors. Alongside her Designer and Milliner, the Dresser wielded considerable influence over the image presented to the world, yet remained vulnerable to the precarious nature of royal favour.
Starring Jane Asher as The Queen, this theatrical production combines humour and poignancy whilst celebrating one of Britain's most recognisable figures during her Centenary year.
