Alula Down, the collaborative project of Kate Gathercole and Mark Waters, creates music rooted in place and human connection. Drawing on eclectic influences, the duo employs collage, improvisation, and field recording to explore both traditional and original compositions, layering folk song with drone and textured soundscape. Their work engages with how folk traditions illuminate social divisions and inequality, examining the relationship between self and other.
Based in Herefordshire, Gathercole and Waters have collaborated with multi-award-winning author Max Porter and celebrated banjo player Jacken Elswyth. They remain active in the experimental music community through various projects and co-run seasonal community folk song choirs.
Supporting the evening is a new collaboration between writer Sophie Napthine and musician Nick Jonah Davis. Napthine delivers spoken word pieces accompanied by Davis's musical arrangements, with this performance focusing on folk tales featuring the fox.
