Rambling Cinema is a film club dedicated to eventually showing one film from every country in the world, and this month we're going to Chile with THE MOLE AGENT!
When a family suspects their mother isn't being looked after properly in a Chilean nursing home, 83 year old Sergio is hired to go undercover, pretending to be a resident in the home to find out the truth. As Sergio struggles to embrace the role of a spy and gets closer to the residents of the home, he discovers what's really going on in this touching, beautiful, funny and ridiculous true story.
This is one of my favourite kinds of film - a documentary which knows that it's actually a genre film, albeit seen through the eyes of retirees in a Chilean nursing home, and leans into the detective noir aesthetic despite the absurdity. With a brilliant eye for the visual style of a noir throwback, a genuinely compelling mystery and a thoroughly human approach to the people at the story's centre, this is the perfect film to prove that not all documentaries are dry!
