Nine Sixteenths examines a pivotal moment in pop culture history and its lasting implications. On 1 February 2004, a wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl halftime show resulted in overexposure lasting mere fractions of a second, yet triggered consequences that significantly impacted one artist's career trajectory whilst another's continued to flourish.
This production explores questions of accountability, media control, and the disproportionate scrutiny faced by black women in the public sphere. Through three acts—The Malfunction, The Aftermath, and Reclamation—the piece traces this narrative across the early 2000s landscape.
Performed by four black female artists, Nine Sixteenths blends devised theatre, dance, and lip sync to create a visual exploration of representation in pop culture. The work combines nostalgic references to the era with contemporary reflection on power dynamics within media and entertainment industries.
