About this event

THE WORKSHOP

This half-day workshop will involve looking at the art of writing effective and memorable endings for a full-length piece (short story, novel, or script) and also individual chapters or scenes. Through a variety of exercises, the session will explore the importance of constructing an overall ending which lingers in the reader or audience’s mind, and brings meaning to what has happened before, whilst also looking at how the ending of individual chapters/scenes need to effectively engage and intrigue the reader/audience to continue with the next part of the story.

The workshop will examine the importance of controlling rhythm and pace for drawing the full story or the chapter/scene to a close, and how this directly affects the mood of the piece. This will include looking at the crucial role of redrafting to create the desired effect, and how the right structure and length of the final sentence, has a direct influence on the memorability of the end moment.

Examples of highly memorable and successful endings will be discussed during the session, looking at how writers have effectively achieved a satisfactory ending. Also considering how this may include a level of ambiguity, encouraging readers to use their imagination to fill in any gaps, making the experience of the reader/audience more interactive and memorable.
