About this event

Afree, hands-on workshop for families this May half term - inspired by the cathedral's Gothic Revival designs

Step into the world of the cathedral's celebrated designer, Augustus Welby Pugin, and discover the craft behind the colours that bring his interiors to life. In this hands-on family workshop, artist Alex Vincent Turner invites you to grind pigments, mix natural paints, and craft your own paintbrushes using traditional materials;  the same kind of techniques that inspired Pugin's richly decorated schemes here at St Barnabas. It's a chance to slow down, get your hands a little colourful, and look at the cathedral with fresh eyes.

About the workshop

The workshop is led by artist Alex Vincent Turner and is inspired by the decorative paint schemes designed by Augustus Welby Pugin, the 19th-century architect responsible for the cathedral's celebrated interiors. Pugin (1812–1852) was a leading figure of the Gothic Revival and designed St Barnabas Cathedral, which opened in 1844.

Families will:

  • Explore how natural pigments become paint
  • Make and take home their own handmade paintbrush
  • Play with colour in the spirit of Pugin's original designs

We recommend spending time in the cathedral before the workshop to see Pugin's original designs up close — a quick wander will set the imagination going before you pick up a brush.
