About this event

Candice Carty-Williams took the publishing industry by storm in 2019 with her debut, Queenie, which was a Sunday Times Bestseller, a novel that critics called ‘vital’ and ‘boldly political’, was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize and won book and the author of the year at the National Book Awards – Candice was the first Black female writer to win the award. Queenie was adapted for Channel 4 and Hulu. Candice’s original drama, Champion, aired on BBC One in the UK and Netflix globally, in 2023 and was a critical and commercial success.

Queenie is Working on It sees the protagonist, Queenie Jenkins, navigating life in her 30s – covering themes such as fertility, medical treatment of Black women, racism in the workplace, familial dynamics, how friendships evolve and change in your 30s, grief and, of course, terrible hen-dos.

We will have exclusive indie bookshop editions of the new book that Candice can sign for you on the night!

Candice is one of the most important cultural writers writing today, a passionate advocate for ensuring Black voices are heard and writing content that is universally relatable amongst women.

Candice will be in conversation with Nottingham literary superstar: Cara Thompson. Cara is a writer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist; Nottingham’s Nature Poet Laureate and Wasafiri’s Writer in Residence. A proud descendant of Jamaican migrants who came to Britain as part of the pioneering Windrush generation, her work explores the richness and complexities of Caribbean-British heritage, inviting audiences to reflect on shared histories, memory, and humanity.
